A runner – 18-year-old Maxim Korolyov from Astana, a student of the Almaty branch of the St. Petersburg Humanitarian University of Trade Unions died during the Almaty half marathon.

A runner – 18-year-old Maxim Korolyov from Astana, a student of the Almaty branch of the St. Petersburg Humanitarian University of Trade Unions died during the Almaty half marathon. According to fellow students who accompanied him as fans, the deceased had the qualification of candidate for master of sports of RK in “wrestling and combat sambo” and he was a winner of the city sports contest in cross-country (1st place). According to eyewitnesses, the young man suddenly became ill, while running down Abay Street, a quarter to the finish.  An ambulance crew that arrived three minutes later at the scene of the accident, stated death. According to doctors, the cause of the young man’s death will be known on the basis of a forensic medical examination, and its results will be reported to the relatives soon. The organizers contacted relatives, expressed condolences, organized the arrival of parents in Almaty.

Saltanat Kazybayeva, director of the “Courage to be the first” Corporate Fund, noted that usually at the start, the routes of all distances are always carefully worked out together with the services of the Department of Internal Affairs, ambulance stations and medical personnel with the necessary positions for first aid are placed at each feeding point. “However, after this tragic incident, we will consider measures of reinforcement according to the requirements for the admission of athletes to the competitions,” said S. Kazybaeva.
